Bimal Akoijam: MP from Manipur Shri A Bimol Akoijam said that the Centre and the state governments had completely abdicated their responsibility in restoring peace and protecting the lives of people. He demanded urgent peace measures in Manipur after the eruption of fresh violence in the troubled state, the Congress demanded a probe with time-bound justice. The Party has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister urging immediate government intervention, including time-bound probes and institutional reforms, following recent killings and continuing unrest in Manipur.
Shri Akoijam cited the gruesome incident on the intervening night of April 6-7 at Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur district in which two children were killed and their mother injured, along with a separate firing incident at a CRPF post in Gelmon village that left three persons dead and several injured.
He also flagged continuing violence in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts since February, including deaths and arson amid the closure of National Highway-202, the latest incident being the killing of a BSF jawan on April 10.
The Congress Party sought strict action against armed groups and individuals involved in illegal activities.
The Party also called for reorganisation and strengthening of Manipur Police as the primary institution responsible for maintaining law and order in the state. It flagged the administrative failure and erosion of effectiveness.
The Party also demanded deferment of census and delimitation until law and order improves and a judicious process is undertaken under the Citizenship Act, 1955, to identify citizens and non-citizens and setting up of ‘Foreigners Tribunal’, under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, to address illegal immigration.
