Congress asks govt. to put trade deal on hold

Spokesperson: Shri Jairam Ramesh: Shri Jairam Ramesh, AICC General Secretary in-charge Communications said that the Congress today called upon the government to put the Indo-US Trade Deal on hold in view of the decision of the United States Supreme Court invalidating the reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Trump.

The Congress general secretary questioned the tearing hurry shown by Prime Minister Modi in getting the trade deal announced by the US President Donald Trump on February 2. He quoted Trump’s announcement, where he had said that he was announcing the deal at the behest of his “dear friend Prime Minister Modi”.

Shri Jairam Ramesh pointed out that the reciprocal tariffs were invalidated and overruled by the US Supreme Court by an emphatic majority judgement, with six judges ruling against the tariffs and only three in favour. He said, the judgement clearly said that Trump was not authorised to impose the reciprocal tariffs as it was against the US law and the Constitution. Referring to Trump’s statement after the Supreme Court decision that the Indo-US Trade Agreement still holds, Shri Jairam Ramesh asserted that the Prime Minister Modi must say in clear and unambiguous terms that the ‘Framework of Interim Agreement’ cannot be implemented under current circumstances in view of the US Supreme Court’s decision.

He asked some questions to the Prime Minister. “Does Modi agree with Trump that the trade agreement with India still holds?” he asked, while pointing out there was no response from the government so far. He pointed out, both the Prime Minister and the Commerce Minister were quiet. Saturday, February 21, 2026
