Don’t hide behind women reservation hurry in hasting through delimitation

Spokesperson: Ms. Supriya Shrinate: The Chairperson of the Social Media and Digital Platforms Ms. Supriya Shrinate said that the Modi-led BJP government was trying to hide behind the Women Reservation to push through its agenda of delimitation through the backdoor and undemocratically and also avoid the caste census.

Noting that the Women’s Reservation was already a settled issue as it had been unanimously passed way back in September 2023, she said that the government’s real intention now was delimitation and avoiding the ‘caste census’. She also referred to Prime Minister Modi once saying that those demanding caste census were ‘urban naxals’.

She pointed out that the government had put certain riders for implementing the women reservation like census and delimitation when the law was passed. Otherwise, she said, the opposition led by the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Ms Sonia Gandhi had asserted that it was time only to implement the law without any delay and start providing the benefit of reservation to women from the 2024 General Elections.

Ms. Shrinate wondered as to what happened within thirty months that Prime Minister Modi was going to change what he had done himself. “Why this change of heart?” she asked, adding that the real intention of the Prime Minister is to push through the delimitation and avoid the caste census.

The Congress spokesperson said that the Women Reservation was the result of the affirmative action taken by the Congress which laid the foundation for it through the 73rdand 74th amendments under Rajeev Gandhi’s leadership, and it is the result of that affirmative action that today there are about 15 lakh elected women representatives in urban and rural local bodies across the country.
