Spokespersons: Shri Vinod Jhakhar, Ms. Gurmehar Kaur and Ms. Richa Kushwaha: They assured the students being harassed by police in different states that the IYC and NSUI stood by them. They said that in Bihar, students were shot at with AK-47, and one student is battling for his life in hospital. They asked the students to call on the SOS helpline number, assuring them that the IYC and NSUI would extend all possible assistance, including legal support. The SOS helpline number is 9811867474.

The Indian Youth Congress and National Students’ Union of India accused the government of India of going back on its promise to the students that all the cases against them will be dropped. They said that students in the BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Assam were being targeted and harassed by the police there.

The IYC and NSUI also announced that a dedicated SOS helpline had been set up under the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ (CKG) programme for all those students who were being harassed by the police in Delhi and other BJP-ruled states for participating in the protests.

Holding Union Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the violence on peaceful protestors, Shri Vinod Jakhar said that the cops on the ground cannot have the audacity to use such brutal force and fire on the students without the directions from the top. He added that students are now demanding Amit Shah’s resignation, and that the IYC and NSUI stood with the students and would hold protests across the country. He said that besides the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, students have several other demands, including the withdrawal of the cases against them and disbanding of the NTA. He said, while the government had gone back on its promise and was continuously harassing the protestors, it had taken no action against the NTA. Listing the IYC and NSUI’s other demands, he said that examinations should be conducted in a transparent manner, an annual examination calendar should be announced and adhered to, and a strong anti-paper leak law with stringent penalties should be enacted.
