Spokesperson: Shri K.C. Venugopal: He said that Hon’ble Congress President and all other leaders of the Opposition parties (INDIA Bloc) have shared their strong views on SIR and need of a discussion in the Parliament on SIR. We didn’t understand that the fundamental principle of democracy is being questioned by Election Commission itself. They are not even listening to the Hon’ble Supreme Court; they are not ready for discussion on this issue in the Parliament. If the Election Commission is unilaterally going to take away the voting right of a common citizen of this country… poor, downtrodden, marginalized people…where can they express their sentiments? We, the members of the Parliament, believe that it is our duty to raise this issue in the Parliament, but there is no avenue for a discussion.
They are now relying on old Speaker’s ruling, but as per the Representation of the People Act, it is very clear - revision of voter list is under the purview of the Constitution. If that cannot be discussed in the Parliament, where it can be discussed?
Therefore, I think, government wants to hide something. They don’t want an open discussion in the Parliament. They want to hide something, that is why they are putting pressure on Speaker and Chairperson - don’t allow discussion. In the Lok Sabha, we are not getting 10 seconds to raise this issue. Opposition parties not getting even 10 seconds toraise an important issue… what is the point of Parliament session? Therefore, we are not going to stop here itself. This is the fundamental issue of the democracy.
On 11th of this month, entire Opposition MPs will march to Election Commission of India.
All MPs will go, come what may, we want to have a clear-cut answer from the Election Commission of India. We are seeking an answer from the Election Commission of India. Wednesday, August 6, 2025
