Spokesperson: Smt. Supriya Shrinate: Spokesperson and Chairperson of the social media and Digital Platforms Smt. Supriya Shrinate revealed that multiple accounts across various social media platforms were blocked or restricted in India under official directives.
The Congress Party condemned the Modi government for the crackdown on social media, including Twitter (X), YouTube and Instagram, by ordering closure of several accounts which are critical of the government. The Party said that this will not stop people from raising genuine questions.
She said that the Narendra Modi-led government was trying to suppress dissent and evade accountability by curbing digital expression.
Smt. Supriya Shrinate said that even independent content creators and media platforms, including YouTube channels and magazine-related posts, faced action, while citing instances of police detention of a YouTuber reporting on gas shortages in Noida.
She further said that such actions were being carried out under Section 69A of the IT Act on the directions of the Ministries headed by Ashwini Vaishnaw, with bureaucrats deciding what content should be accessible in India.
Calling it a “serious attack on freedom of expression,” she said she personally received multiple notices from social media platforms regarding content restrictions.
Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said that the government was intolerant of criticism and was weakening democratic institutions by restricting opposition voices and public questioning. Thursday, March 19, 2026
