Pollution shortening citizens’ lives

Spokesperson: Shri Sandeep Dikshit: He said that pollution in Delhi has exceeded all limits in the last six to seven years. He lashed out at the BJP government in Delhi over the rising air pollution in the national capital which was killing people like a slow poison.

The common man is suffering amid accusations and counter-accusations between the BJP government in Delhi and the AAP government in Punjab. “It is shortening citizens’ lives by six to seven years, and those who are sick are at even greater risk”, he noted, adding that it was like murder,” he said.

The actual reasons for pollution persist round the year, he said. He referred to some of the main causes that fall directly within the government’s jurisdiction and said that the Delhi government and the governments of neighbouring states cannot escape their responsibility by simply blaming the farmers or air or other people.

Dikshit noted that the increased pollution is also caused due to the lack of adequate public transport. He said that compared to 2013-14, not even half the number of buses are running today. Giving details, he added, in 2013-14, the DTC had 40-41 lakh daily ridership, but today the connectivity has dropped to 30-32 lakh, while the population has increased by 30-40 percent. He pointed out that metro expansion has been stalled. “Despite the Phase Four plan being formulated 10-12 years ago, no new planning or new initiatives have been implemented”, he said. He added that a weak public transport network is a major reason for the growing dependence on private transport.

The Congress leader also targeted the BJP government regarding the pollution emanating from thousands of illegal factories operating in Delhi.

He also blamed the increasing pollution on the burning of garbage heaps, saying this is the result of the MCD’s inefficiency. Saturday, November 29, 2025
