Global Gender Gap: India at number 140, slipped 28 places

India lagged behind Bangladesh in Global Gender Gap report

India has slipped 28 places to reach the 140th position in the list of 156 countries, as well as being the third-worst performer in South Asia.

Earlier in the Global Gender Gap Report 2020, India ranked 112th among 153 countries.

Highlights of the Global Gender Gap Report 2021

• According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Distinction Ratio Report 2021, there has also been a decline in the area of economic participation and opportunity in India. According to the report, the sex ratio in the region has increased by 3 percent to 32.6 percent.

• According to the report, the biggest decline has come in the political empowerment sub index, in which the number of women ministers has again decreased to 13.5 percent (which was 23.1 percent in 2019, it has now come down to 9.1 percent). Apart from this, the female labour participation rate has also declined according to this report, which has come down from 24.8 percent to 22.3 percent.

• At the same time, in this report, the role of women in the professional and technical fields has come down to 29.2 percent. The report said that in this sector, women also have only 14.6 percent participation in senior and management level positions and the number of women at the top manager level is only 8.9 percent.

• In the sub index related to health and survival, there has also been a case of discrimination against women. India is included in the lowest 5 countries in this case.

• According to the report, due to gender-based thinking, there has also been a big difference in the sex ratio at birth. In addition to this, one in four women have been suffering from life-threatening violence.

• In terms of sexual literacy, one-third of women (34.2 percent) are illiterate compared to 17.6 percent of men.

Among India’s neighbours, Bangladesh ranks 65th in the Global Gender Gap Report 2021, Nepal 106th, Pakistan 153rd, Afghanistan 156th, Bhutan 130th and Sri Lanka 116th.

South Asia is the second worst performing region in the world in the Global Gender Gap report.
