New Delhi: Addressing the media outside Parliament Street Police Station on August 21, 2026, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Shri Rahul Gandhi said that the youth had been carrying pellets in his body for a month, including three pellets in his eye that had affected his vision and three-four pellets near his heart.
He said that the registration of an FIR in connection with a youth injured by pellet gunfire during a student protest in Delhi marked the “first step towards justice”, while questioning why it took police nearly eight hours to register the case.
“Clearly, injustice has been done to a young man,” Shri Rahul Gandhi said, adding that the youth and his family had been seeking justice for nearly a month. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Shri Rahul Gandhi, along with victim Sahil, his mother and lawyer, had reached the police station around 11-11.30 am, but the FIR was finally registered around 6.45-7 pm.
“If justice is not available at a police station right in the middle of Delhi, imagine what happens at a police station in a village or a small town,” he asked.
He said that he and other Congress leaders and workers accompanying him had done nothing wrong, and had only sought justice for an Indian citizen and his parents.
Shri Rahul Gandhi said that the “final permission” for registering the FIR had to come from the Home Secretary and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“The final OK had to be given by the Home Secretary and Amit Shah ji. So, you can understand who was stopping the FIR,” he said.
Shri Rahul Gandhi also said that the police personnel at the station wanted to register the FIR but were being prevented from doing so because of “orders from above”.
