Amarnath Yatra: After cloudburst tragedy

Amarnath Yatra: After cloudburst and flash floods on July 8, 2022, evening claimed at least 16 lives, the Amarnath Yatra remains suspended in Jammu and Kashmir. More than 40 people are still missing and rescue operations - that continued overnight - are still on.

Most of the pilgrims who were stranded near the holy cave area due to flash floods last evening have been shifted to Panjtarni. The ITBP expanded its route opening and protection parties from lower holy cave to Panjtarni.

In a statement by Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi, she said, “I was very distressed to learn of the tragic death of a number of pilgrims on account of a cloudburst near the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in J&K. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.”

In a tweeted message by former Congress President Shri Rahul Gandhi, he said, “The news of the disappearance and death of many devotees due to cloudburst near the Amarnath cave is extremely distressing.

I wish the injured a speedy recovery and extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”
