New Delhi: On March 17, 2026, Leader of Opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi met with the group of GIG Workers and listened to their problems and asked the government questions, directly in the Lok Sabha:
• Will gig-workers get minimum wage? - No reply • What is the data of their claim (file, approved, rejected) in insurance plans? - No reply • Tell the accidents and deaths of gig-workers? - No reply • Does the Government have any plans to solve ID blocking, caste-based discrimination and problems of female workers? - No reply Government’s silence shows that the labour of our gig-workers, their respect, their security, is not in the priority of this government.
The reality is that according to the Policy Commission statistics, there will soon be more than 2 crore gig workers in the country, but only 8.8 lakh workers are registered on the eShram portal. The situation in insurance plans is worse - 23,831 in Jyoti insurance plan and 1.3 million gig workers registered in security insurance plan.
The question is clear - will gig workers become partners in this gig economy or just remain corporate slaves? Ensuring appropriate income and social security is crucial in order to convey the benefits of this economy to workers.
