IYC appoints 34% women in its National Committee

Delhi: Setting an example to the country, Indian Youth Congress urges the present government and the parliament to pass Women’s Reservation Bill. Highlighting the need of the hour and by becoming a torchbearer, Indian Youth Congress has appointed 34% women in its New National Committee and created history by probably becoming the first political organization not only in India but in the World to have over 34% representation of women in the Organization’s decision making process.

To achieve the object of equality and empowerment through political participation, the Congress Party under the leadership of Late. Sh. Rajiv Gandhi ji mooted the provision for reservation of women in panchayats and nagar palikas. Even though the concerted efforts of the Congress Party to provide adequate political representation for women got thwarted in Rajya Sabha in the year 1989, the same was passed by both houses of Parliament in 1993 becoming the 73rd & 74th Amendments to the Constitution.

The amendments mandated 33.3% reservation for women in Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies. Overnight it gave women a political voice and changed women’s position in the public domain forever. More than 1.3 million constitutionally elected women, mostly from socially disadvantaged groups, took on the mantle of leadership to transform their communities and villages. Over the years, women have described this as a big opportunity.

Despite tall promises in the gender Budget, the Modi government has not done much more than pay lip service to policies that impact women. In this backdrop India Youth Congress has appointed 34% of women in its New National Committee to empower and strengthen women with special emphasis on increasing participation/representation for women in politics. AICC Joint Secretary and IYC incharge Shri Krishna Allavaru and IYC President Shri Srinivas B.V thanked Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji for approving the appointments. IYC now demands from Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi to walk the talk and take up the challenge and increase the representation of women in power centres through their election in the decision-making process of the Country by passing the Women’s reservation bill in the Parliament.
