Shaheed Diwas

This day is observed across the country on March 23 to remember the sacrifice of great freedom fighters of India - Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. On this day in 1931, three great revolutionaries - Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, who played their important role in the Indian freedom struggle - were hanged to death. This day is observed to remember their sacrifice so that the present generation and the posterity may draw inspiration from their ideas.

Bhagat Singh was just 23 years old when he was hanged but his revolutionary ideas were very broad. He was born on September 28, 1907, in Lyallpur district of Punjab. He has given the famous phrase ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ which is quite famous even today.

Sukhdev Thapar was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, British India on 15 May, 1907. He was brought up by his uncle Lala Achintram after the death of his father. Sukhdev participated in numerous revolutionary activities such as a prison hunger strike in 1929 and the Lahore Conspiracy Case (1929-30).

Rajguru was born on 24 August, 1908 at Khed. He received primary education at Khed and later studied in New English High School in Poona.

All the three were involved in the assassination of Deputy Superintendent of Police, J. P. Saunders to avenge the violent death of the veteran leader Lala Lajpat Rai. After being convicted of charges, they were sentenced to death. Scheduled for hanging on 24 March, the three freedom fighters were hanged a day earlier on 23 March, 1931. Thus, on this day every year, tributes and homage are paid at their Memorial in Hussainiwala. Their ideas not only inspire millions of Indian youth, but also their thoughts guide the youth of India even in present times.
